The summer break is a great opportunity for children in Years 3 and 4 to continue learning in fun, relaxed ways while enjoying time with family and friends. Keeping brains active over the holidays helps children return to school confident and ready to learn.

Here are some ideas and resources to support learning at home:

Read Every Day
Encourage your child to read a variety of books - fiction, non-fiction, comics, or even recipes! Visit your local library or try reading together and discussing the story. Ask questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why did the character do that?”

Practise Times Tables and Number Skills
Quick recall of times tables is essential in Key Stage 2. These websites make maths practice fun and engaging:

  • Hit The Button – Great for practising number bonds, times tables, and division facts.
  • Times Tables Rock Stars (TT Rockstars)  A fun and competitive way to build fluency in multiplication and division.
  • EdShed – Includes Maths Shed and Spelling Shed to support key skills through games and challenges.

Play and Learn
Board games, puzzles, and card games help develop logic, strategy, and social skills. Try games like Uno, Scrabble, or even a homemade quiz!

Explore the Outdoors
Go on nature walks, visit a local museum, or try a scavenger hunt. Encourage your child to keep a summer journal or scrapbook of their adventures.

Get Creative
Write stories, poems, or comic strips. Draw, paint, or build something from recycled materials. Creative activities help with expression, imagination, and fine motor skills.

Listen and Learn
Podcasts and audiobooks are a great way to enjoy stories and learn new things on the go. Try listening together and talking about what you’ve heard.

Above all, enjoy the summer and make time for fun, rest, and family. Every experience is a chance to learn and grow!
